Many people are unaware that a number of door manufacturers used asbestos in the core of their fire doors prior to the early 1980’s. Asbestos had excellent properties in terms of fire resistance but we all know the hazards associated with it. Although the use of asbestos in manufacturing was banned in Australia on the 31st December 2003, the fact is that thousands of fire doors across Melbourne still have the deadly product contained inside.
When these doors are maintained and are kept good condition, there is no danger of asbestos exposure. Once these doors begin to delaminate, crack and the hardware fitted begins to fail, it’s time to replace them. Any old doors which are to be replaced and are suspected or identified as containing asbestos are double wrapped in plastic with all existing hardware left on them and disposed of at an EPA approved asbestos landfill site. A copy of the disposal docket is then supplied to the customer after the doors have been removed.
Intent can organise asbestos identification for you, along with cleaning, decontamination, air monitoring and clearance certificates in the case of doors being damaged and asbestos leaking from the core of the door.
